MICHAEL HILAL
“Oftentimes, with a little bit of love, you can have something with provenance and a bit of the patina of age that adds much needed texture to a space.”

“I want a space to feel unassuming, chic, and useful,” says San Francisco-based interior designer Michael Hilal, whose interiors marry influences from art and nature to form his singular brand of California cool. Hilal creates private residences from San Francisco to San Deigo, and recently designed “(Her) Study,” for the Kip’s Bay Showhouse in Dallas. His work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Galerie, Dwell, and Veranda, among other publications.
Hilal selected a piece with “Art Deco Machine Age design,” noting, “Usually when you see these chairs they are covered in a leather, so I selected two materials that really soften it - the Schumacher Moiré Silk in Soft Gold and Mohair in Dijon. It really provided a new perspective for this style.”
Esteemed for curating individualist interiors, Hilal notes that he often uses vintage and antiques in his projects. “I find that often the pieces are made better most of the furniture you can find on the market today…Additionally, you can find a relatively unique piece that you won’t walk into your friend’s space and see.”
