Estee Stanley's Outdoor Oasis Gets A Revamp
For most of the country, the word 'summer' instantly evokes those blissful yet fleeting months of outdoor dinner parties and days spent by a pool, or in a garden. In beautiful Los Angeles, however, summer weather is a year long affair, and creating the perfect outdoor oasis at home is perhaps just as important as designing the interior.
Renowned designer Estee Stanley, principal of Hancock Design, understands well the importance of this space; she’s a California girl through and through, and has designed some of Los Angeles’s most beautiful homes. From modern to Spanish style homes, Estee has mastered the balance of function and beauty in her designs.
When considering revamping her own outdoor space, Estee tapped Revitaliste to breath new life into her classic yet weathered garden patio chairs. While they were a beautiful shape and in decent condition, Estee wanted to give them a more polished and refined look, as well as to make sure that they would last years to come.
How we restored these outdoor patio chairs:
Sandblasted to remove all the old paint
Applied a zinc undercoat to weatherize
Powder coated with a warm white color (with a glossy sheen)
Upholstered the outdoor cushions in a new fabric
Tell us about how you came to work with Revitaliste.
I found Revitaliste on Instagram! I thought what they were doing was such a great idea that I really wanted to give them a try. I knew they were working with great artisans and the quality of their work was excellent so I felt really confident sending my chairs off to them.
Why did you choose to restore these chairs rather than buy new chairs?
I already owned the chairs but time had taken its toll; they were in serious need of a facelift. They’d been sitting in my garden with nothing more than a thin coat of spray paint on them so they were pretty rusty. The chairs are classic garden furniture so I felt they were worth restoring.
What was your design vision for these chairs?
I had briefly considered powder coating them in a fun color, but ultimately I decided to keep it classic. I wanted them to feel fresh and clean. Like wall paint, there are a lot of options for different shades of white powder colors. Revitaliste was great in helping me find the perfect crisp white color and the right sheen for the chairs.
What considerations did you make for the powder color?
I needed them to feel fresh and new, so I went with white.
What fabric did you choose for the outdoor cushions?
I used a great Rose Tarlow tonal green striped outdoor fabric. I loved it with the crisp white of the chairs. The feel of this fabric is incredible, it’s so soft that it is hard to believe it’s an outdoor fabric. Like the style of the chairs, I wanted to keep it super clean and classic with the seat cushions.
Describe how you envision these chairs being used.
This is a set of 6 chairs so they’ll be used around the table for dinner parties or pulled around the garden for weekends hanging out with friends. They are really so pretty and durable now. I used to feel nervous sitting in them because they were so rusty…not anymore!
What was the process of working with Revitaliste like for you as a super busy designer?
From start to finish, everything was incredible and really smooth sailing; I would definitely use them again and again. I really appreciated how they made suggestions throughout the process. For example, they suggested I add a zinc undercoat on the chairs to dramatically reduce the likelihood that they’ll rust in the future. They’re super knowledgable about all things furniture revitalization related - and so easy to work with. And best of all, the chairs are perfection!
